Recently, David Rau combines the abstract with his solid roots in photo-realism. Drawn to images in nature such as horses, birds, fish, and more, Rau begins his process with a detailed sketch of his subject allowing for dimension and placement within the canvas. Once established, a multi-step process involving oils, acrylics, and glazes begins bringing forth an abstract background with subtle imagery coming through. Rau then uses his attention for detail to breathe life into his subject making it more the focal point of the work.
Rau, a self-taught artist, has let experiences be his guide. Previously working as a mold maker, sculptor, special effects make-up artist and an art director in Film/TV has directly influenced his career. He regularly engages with other artists and experiments with new materials to improve his skill set. Rau’s work has been featured in galleries in Southern California, Washington State, Idaho, and Japan. Private collectors hold most of his work. Locally, he has art directed for Sawtooth Productions. He is a member of The Bellevue Artist Alliance, The Wood River Valley Studio Tour, and TAG.
