In 2016, I suffered an injury from a surgery that left me without the use of my right arm. Losing the use of my arm has presented challenges and struggles. I have learned to paint left-handed and am back in the studio as often as possible. I still have a long way to go regarding my right arm’s recovery, but, it’s one day at a time. Painting again feels great!
My current work mixes the abstract with realism. Preferring to paint images in nature, I enjoy working with light to understand its relationship to motion. Starting with an abstract background allows me to find the subject matter appropriate for each painting. Something that is blue, green, or yellow might inspire birds or fish. Something that is red, orange, or brown might inspire deer or other wildlife. When I start on a new canvas, I never know where the piece – with its variety of colors, and layers – will end up. I like this journey. – David Rau
